Today was a very interesting day. I had no intention of destroying the multipurpose room and putting it back together again, but that's what happened. Yikes!

You remember the picture wall above the girl's bed? It's gone! I was really struggling with it feeling unbalanced and just sort of off. (When you are not a formally trained interior designer, you tend to go by feel, not rules.) :)

I also thought the one wall full of shelves was making the room feel heavy.

I moved the shelves to either side of the window, moved the sewing machines to the same wall, and created a new picture wall. The last time I did the picture wall it took me 4 tries, and a million holes. This time, I had a blast! It felt right, and I only had one misplaced nail!

Before

 After...

Moral of this story... Go with your gut. If it is not working, maybe you should stop and regroup.

When I did the wall the first time I used pieces of paper the same size as the picture and then taped them on the wall in the placement I liked. It was tricky to figure out where to put the nail, and it required a lot of measuring.

This time I went with my tried and true method..Toothpaste!

Put a little dab of toothpaste right on the end of picture hook.

Take your picture and hold it up where you want it without touching the wall. I do much better with eyeballing it. Once it is were you want it, gently tap the frame against the wall. You will leave a little toothpaste mark on the wall.

Hammer your nail right were your toothpaste mark is.

Wipe the toothpaste off the wall.

Wipe the toothpaste off the frame.

Hang your picture!
If you have multiple hooks on the back of the picture this works great. You can easily fit the nails perfectly in each hook.

Happy Thursday.

Thanks for the tips Molly, although I still have more questions about that picture wall. I want one. I'll see you soon and ask away.

Great toothpaste tip! Wish I had known that one when we were putting up pics, especially multi hook ones. I'll remember it for next time I need to hang something, though. And I think your picture wall looks great! Only you could put a water spigot on the wall and make it look so good! :o)

Wow! A huge, huge improvement even though I like the original. How did you hang the faucet. Every room needs a playful element.

Toothpaste tip! Oh, you have no idea what this is going to do for my motivation to get my own wall done in the stairwell. The thought of tracing and cutting out all of that paper is a drag. Thank you!

Anyway, really nice balance of sizes, textures, and materials on your wall.

Love the tip, but most paintings have wire rather than hooks. Do you have an awesome tip for that contingency?

This is one of those "it is so simple, why didn't I think of that sooner?" sort of solutions :)

Geez, could I have used this info about 4 hours ago! While my husband & I measured & remeasured to hang a mirror I said "I know there must be a trick to doing this." I should have known I'd find it on Pinterest. I will definitely use this method next time. TFS!!

Use masking tape! Seriously, you want tooth paste on your wall? Place the tape on back of your frame and mark the location of both hooks with a sharpie. Remove tape from frame and place on wall. If you are feeling meticulous measure to the top of the frame and place an other line of tape to mark the top of the item. View it, making certain that you're happy with the location. Check everything with a level. Drive your hooks on your sharpie marks. Remove the tape. Hang and level. I work in a furniture store and replace sold art almost everyday and this works fast and easy
